At an event in Kaduna, where the former governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, explained to several Muslim clerics why he chose to lead a Muslim-dominated government in Kaduna state, the former governor also spoke about President Bola Tinubu, the former governor Kaduna state. Mr El-Rufai made the comments in the Hausa. Below is the English translation.
“Now there is a lot of talk about the federal government. It's true what Professor Akintola says: We, the APC governors, decided that the South should produce the next president because that was the promise made. It was an oral agreement, but God knows whether it was written or oral. When we learned that some people were plotting a Northerner to be the next president, we said no. It's not us. We are Muslims, we are northerners, we have traditions and we cannot back down from our promises. We said no. That is the first step.
"When they agree on the next step or see there's nothing they can do, they back off." We sit down to decide who can win seats because they have what it takes to win elections, and secondly, we can end religion. And ethnic politics. We chose Asiwaju (Tinubu Ball). When we decided to support Asiwaju, I didn't have a good relationship with him. We had a fight. But Professor Akintola came from Lagos with the leaders and complimented us on our decision to feature Southerners.
They say Southwest Yoruba is in trouble. If a Muslim want to vote in an election, he will say no to vote because he will not win the election. They believed that only a Christian from the Southwest could compete, so a Muslim from the North would be chosen as their representative. They say it hasn’t happened since Abiola; they want to repeat it. We asked them to decide who would fight, and they said “Asiwaju”. I told them I didn’t have a good relationship with him, but he (Akintola) said we have to make peace for the sake of Islam and I said we will do it.
“Asiwaju got his ticket and when he got it, we knew he had no choice but to choose a Muslim as his representative; otherwise, he would lose the election. Politics is just a calculation, there is no room for maneuver. God knows our intentions. And I swear to God we stand tall to make this happen. We don’t do it for profit. State Governor Zamfara Bello Matawale and I are not doing it for profit. Maybe someone else needs something, but Matawal and I did this to put an end to the problem of religion and to give Muslims in the South West a sense of belonging to the government. And God... regardless of religious ties, God made Asiwaju victorious.
“What we could achieve in Kaduna, we have now achieved nationally. No liar is going to claim that he will do political Christianity and win elections. Peter Obi tried, but nowhere. We’ve put an end to that. They fell silent. Since Asiwaju joined, CAN has been silent.In this way, peace and stability can be guaranteed. If we do it repeatedly, everything will be normal. By God, we did. And some of us think we’ve done our job. Asiwaju won, and we did our part. Our appeal is for you to pray that he finds the right people to work with.”
