WHATSAPP CHANGES NEXT: PHONE NUMBER IS NO LONGER REQUIRED
WhatsApp, the messenger with which I have a special relationship, is about to undergo a major change. The app, which limits contacts to phone numbers I know of, will soon allow users to create unique, searchable usernames. The change was spotted by WABetaInfo, a website that analyzes trial versions of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp introduces usernames instead of phone numbers: a step towards more privacy?
There’s a bit of information about how unique names work in Messenger. However, we believe this change is aimed at increasing the privacy of app users. This is proven because conversations conducted by users with unique names are still protected by state-of-the-art end-to-end encryption, meaning that only the user can access them.
Giving out a phone number to strangers is sensitive information in today’s world, so eliminating the need for this is a positive step. We still don’t know when the unique username will appear on WhatsApp. Because this feature is currently in the testing phase. The newly released version of Sent Messages remained in developer limbo for over a year before moving on to the stable version of the program.
Unique usernames are not a new solution, as they are also used by other messaging services. Discord takes it a step further by allowing users to set an independent nickname of their choice on any server. However, I wish the username search would become an optional setting in WhatsApp. I don’t want random people to start texting me after finding my unique nickname.

Universal, it’s miles a tremendous step that WhatsApp is moving toward precise usernames.This increases user privacy and makes the app more accessible to those who might not want to share their phone number. If this feature becomes official as an optional arrangement, WhatsApp can confidently move on with the idea.
