Meta launched Threads, a new SMS app to rival Twitter.
The move is a bold attempt to poach users on a nearly cloned platform of a flagging competitor. The Guardian tested the new social network on Wednesday, minutes after its very exciting launch. Won’t that impress Elon Musk or cause him some real trouble?

I began searching for "Threads" in the App Store. I connected my professional Instagram page to log in to the app.. This is where I became a Threads user.
Threads can only be accessed by integrating an existing Instagram username at login. So, if you don’t have an account yet, you will need to have one to log in to the new Threads platform. I was wondering if I should create a separate Threads account based on my personal Instagram page, but that’s a question for another time. For now, you can follow me @Ahalancy__.

When you open the app, you’ll see buttons to like, repost, reply, or quote “threads,” as well as a counter that shows the number of likes and replies a post has received. Posts are limited to 500 characters, which is more than Twitter’s 280 character limit, and can contain links, photos, and videos of up to five minutes.
Using threads feels like a fever dream where Twitter and Instagram come up with more viable ideas. The feed is simple to read, but it is mainly accounts I'm not familiar with. This could improve as more users join..
Unlike Twitter, threads don’t appear to use hashtags and don’t have a feature that would allow users to search for specific text or phrases. Additionally, users can share up to 10 photos in a single post — the same limit as Instagram — as opposed to Twitter’s four-image limit.
This app has been tested in the US and is available in 100 countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada and Japan..

So is it better than Twitter?
The Twitter Meta clone feels like using Twitter. Functions - like, retweet, follow - are almost identical to the old predecessor microblogging. Twitter has become cluttered and difficult to use since Musk took over, but it can be a relief to open the app and be able to view and interact with content.
It’s the user experience that Meta is betting on, publicly stating that Twitter’s clutter has made room for new products to hit the market. Adam Mosseri, Instagram's head of product, told The Verge that Twitter's recent "uncertainty" has created a need for a new platform.
“Clearly, Twitter is a pioneer in this space,” said Mosseri. “But with everything that’s been going on, we thought there was an opportunity to create something that opened up and something that was good for the community that was already using Instagram.”
As a technical writer who has reported on various topics, I enjoy using threads.. I already use WhatsApp and Instagram daily and have a Facebook account which is barely active but still there. Do I really want to share more of my data with one of the biggest tech companies in the world?
Should we be concerned about growing meta power?
Like many Meta-Run products, Threads offers a confusing experience that integrates almost too well with existing products. If you create an account, you can follow your existing Instagram circles. Your followers will probably get a notification that you created an account and posted, encouraging them to do the same.
And then there’s the longstanding privacy issue. Regulators have raised a number of concerns about Threads as the tech giant seeks to attract more users to its world. Threads may collect information like health, financial, location, and purchases.
Due to this issue, threads are not yet available in the European Union, which has strict data protection regulations. The company is working to roll out the app in more countries, but has justified its decision to delay the European launch by regulatory uncertainty.
The app protects users by enforcing Instagram's Community Guidelines and giving them control over who can mention or reply to them.
